I recently became transfixed by the Victoria lily, an astonishing plant with leaves that can exceed 9' (3m) in diameter. These ceramic pieces are both sculpture and functional pieces. A reverie in the midst of increasingly dark political times, they remind me of the Buddhist metaphor that out of the muck of life arises the lotus of enlightenment. Sometimes in the firing process, a serendipitous crack appears, which call to mind Leonard Cohen's line, "There's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."
